I got to see that red dress live and in person (with mandie_rw) when the historical movie costume tour came to Allentown about 2 years ago. It is really beautiful!

*IS JEALOUS*

A lot of people don't like the late '20s/early '30s, but I think they're fantastic. XD

For a while, I didn't either. I think it's the fashion plates--they look so weird and sickly. But--every period dress and reproduction I've seen has been lovely and breathtaking, especially when worn!

Mmm, that's true! Some look really nice, but especially the ones with the giant gigot sleeves kind of add to the whole frailty look. XP

I loved this version of the film, too. Ralph Fiennes is (as ALWAYS XP ) at his best, but I love how he gives so much depth to a character whom a lot of people hate. I love the scene where he thinks Tatyana is coming towards him on the ice pond, and you can see that he's starting to smile, to be really happy for the first time in six years (and how frail he looks, clutching his stole!), like a weight is being lifted from him- and then she turns, and you can see it's like she reached into his chest and took his heart with her. His face just gets this amazing shocked look, followed by pain, and I love how he puts his hand to his chest like it hurts- BECAUSE it hurts.

Gah, sorry, I just LOVE this story. XP I thin it'd be super fun to do a weekend up in the mountains a la 1820s/30s, because their winterwear is so cute, but I don't know if just doing it for that would be worth it.

...that's a stupid thing to say, of course it would. ^_^

I have not seen the movie yet (I'll get to it someday), but I do love Ralph Fiennes. He does put a LOT of depth into characters people hate (ie, Voldemort, Duke of Devonshire, Dolarhyde in Red Dragon, and most frighteningly, Amon Goth).

I must look into this winterwear, I don't know enough about the period....

Yes! He makes them relatable, if you're willing to look at who they really are- makes you see that they're people, too.
